There seems to be a crisis touching every corner of the country and this is the issue of gun violence and the myths that go with this issue. Sure, we all want to protect our children and our communities, and often that starts with dispelling rumors about gun violence. Many people fail to understand that most often these problems occur from people who have no legal carry permit and no registered firearm in their name. We look at facts involving gun violence like there are over one hundred deaths per day from a firearm and fail to see that over sixty percent of those are self-inflicted gunshot wounds and suicide attempts. The population is quick to point a finger at a police officer who fired his weapon and fails to see that only 1.4 percent of shootings are police-related. People are quick to point out that in the United States we have the highest gun violence rate. Are they forgetting that we have more access to firearms in the United States and higher income levels? Perhaps they are forgetting other important facts too. For example that the 36 percent of homicides are committed by criminals and not law-abiding citizens who have followed the proper firearms registration protocol.
We are not denying the issues at hand, we are simply suggesting that as firearms owners we know the facts and help to dispel rumors that go hand in hand with gun violence. We must all do our part to fight this 229 billion dollar problem that we have in America and part of that is fighting myths and dealing in facts. It takes courage to have an informed voice on issues like crime and guns. It is important to understand that students, activists, Faith leaders, and even educators often get the myths straight and the facts incorrect. As a handgun owner and firearms enthusiast, we need to set the record on gun violence straight with actual facts. This is the way we will become part of the solution and not a bigger part of the problem.
