It was many years ago when I first gave thought to learning to carry a gun for my personal self-defense. I had been reading the local news in the area where I was living and was not impressed by the high level of crime in my own community. This was not the only reason I thought about purchasing a gun, Richard Ramirez had not been identified and the national news was talking about the “Night Stalker” and the idea behind it scared the pants off me. I was already locking my doors and windows but this stalker who was on a killing rampage was still at large and who knows, he could be coming to a city near you or me for that matter. I knew that I needed to buy a firearm and learn how to use it for personal defense. I also knew that buying a gun was not enough, I also needed personal defense training. If there were two things I was sure of, they were that I was buying a gun and getting training to use that gun correctly. I called my father and told him to keep his doors and windows locked and that I was buying a firearm. He suggested I get a 9mm. I went to a local range and they started to train me with a SIG P226, in 9 mm and I was enjoying it. I learned so much while shooting and training at that range. They taught me not to close one eye and how to use the Weaver stance and all about tea-cupping. I made numerous mistakes even while under the direction of a seasoned marksman. I was assured that when I left the training class I would know much more about guns and shooting and they were correct. I even bought a firearm and I remember that I didn’t have enough money for a holster so I carried the gun in a bag for almost eight months. I finally bought a holster and got my permits to carry. I am happy knowing that I took the time to get trained and now know how to shoot and draw my firearm if I need to. Lucky for me, I have not had to draw it or use it. I still love the feeling of knowing that I am protected simply because I have it if I ever need it. If you have been thinking about getting yourself a personal defense firearm, I suggest that you do it and get the knowledge you need to use it correctly too. You will be happy that you took the time to do so.
