Last month’s background check statistics have revealed an exceptional trend in the U.S. firearms industry. For nearly four straight years, over-the-counter firearm sales have been hitting the 1 million mark in background checks each month. This information was confirmed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), a renowned industry leader, based on the June 2023 data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (FBI NICS).
The unadjusted total of the FBI NICS checks for June 2023 came in at a staggering 2,152,187. After meticulous data analysis by the NSSF, removing checks and rechecks related to clearing carry permits and other non-sales reasons, the probable retail gun sales still remain significantly high at 1,110,696.
Notably, this figure is the fifth highest ever recorded for the month of June throughout the NICS program’s 24-year history. Moreover, the 1.1 million tally underscores the impressive seven-figure benchmark that has consistently been met since July 2019, underlining the strong and ongoing demand for firearms.
Mark Oliva, the NSSF’s public affairs director, poignantly captured the essence of these impressive figures. Speaking to Guns.com, he said, “Americans have another million reasons to celebrate this Independence Day. These figures rebut the demands by gun control advocates to surrender rights. In contrast, Americans are choosing, by the millions, to keep and bear arms, thus keeping alive the Founding Fathers’ vision of a nation that lauds the ethos of a responsibly armed citizenry.”
Beyond the impressive 1.1 million checks for over-the-counter sales last month, there are additional sales not captured in these figures. The data does not track sales in states with a Brady exemption for carry permit holders, personally manufactured firearms, or person-to-person sales, which are legal without NICS checks in most states.
